"Celebrating Over 37 Years"

On the last Sunday in January, 1950, Bible Study classes were started by Dr. Carl E. Compton at the home of Donnie and Thelma Chestnut. For several weeks the living room, dining room, kitchen, and several other spaces were used for the gatherings. As attendance grew they had to search for a larger place to meet. Donnie offered the use of his tobacco packhouse just north of his home.

To publicize the meeting place they decided to place a sign with information as to the times of the services.  Dr. Carl Compton asked Donnie what they should call their meeting place. He replied, “Chestnutville, I suppose.” He failed to understand what he said and had “Chestnut Hill” placed on the sign. They used the names on church records, in newsletters, and in announcements. As a result, the name stuck.

The church activities continued for about three years. During that time, twenty-two people became members of the First Baptist Church in Myrtle Beach. The decision was made to encourage those attending Chestnut Hill Mission to become involved in services at the church since greater opportunities, particularly for the children and youth, were available there. Services ceased at Chestnut Hill, but the many people who attended meetings there continued in their faithfulness. If you look closely entering the area we know as “Restaurant Row” from either direction you will notice a small state highway sign declaring this area…”Chestnut Hill.”

Dear Customer:

“Fresh,” “Homemade,” and “Local” are words often used to describe the various items found on so many restaurant menus in the Grand Strand area. Seldom are these repetitious terms truthful.

Here at Chestnut Hill, we do not compromise, “flower,” or misuse the wording on our menu; we simply produce the freshest, homemade foods found anywhere on the Strand. Naturally, this takes considerable time and effort to prepare so many items from scratch. We feel that there are no substitutes for quality.

Speaking for the entire staff, we would like to thank you for dining with us and hope that the memory of a most enjoyable meal will go with you.
Sincerely,

Chris Lee
